Álvaro is a Geologist from the University of Chile and a PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Bristol (U.K), and he is currently head of the National Volcanic Surveillance Network. His research interests are mainly focused on remote detection of gases of volcanic / geothermal origin using UV and IR spectrometry, analysis of modern pyroclastic deposits, and numerical modeling of volcanological processes. He has concentrated his studies around the volcanoes San Pedro and Láscar (Altiplano del Norte de Chile), Descabezados Group and Laguna del Maule (Central Chile), Chaitén, Michinmahuida and Hudson (North Patagonia).
