CEGA researcher obtains ANID Fund related to Drought and Hydrogeology

Tuesday, 28 de December

Linda Daniele,  head teacher of the Department of Geology of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and also researcher at the Center of Excellence in Geothermal Energy of the Andes (CEGA), awarded  the tender “Strategic Drought Research Fund” Contest of the National Agency of Research and Development of Chile (ANID) 2021.

The Project, called “Breaking the current recharge paradigm in central Chile: A deep borehole for andean groundwater flows estimation”, proposes to carry out a comprehensive hydrogeological study to monitor groundwater recharge by observing sub-surface and deep flows along the fractured zone of the Aconcagua Basin.

“It will allow us to have direct information from a depth that, until now, is considered high and has not been explored for scientific purposes for groundwater resources”, Linda said.

To carry out this project, the drilling of a deep well is contemplated, in order to a  better understanding of the processes that govern the water cycle in the central zone of the country. The budget delivered by ANID will be 300 million pesos for 2022.
