Doctor en Geolog\u00eda de la Universidad de Michigan, Profesor Titular del Departamento de Geolog\u00eda (DGL) de la Facultad de Ciencias F\u00edsicas y Matem\u00e1ticas (FCFM) de la Universidad de Chile, desde 2015, e investigador principal del Centro de Excelencia en Geotermia de Los Andes (CEGA) -Fondap ANID de la Universidad de Chile y la Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica-desde sus inicios. Martin Reich asumi\u00f3 como director del DGL a principios de julio, cargo que ejercer\u00e1 hasta 2024 con el desaf\u00edo a corto plazo de \u201cseguir retomando la presencialidad en nuestro quehacer universitario<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n A un mes de haber asumido en su nuevo cargo, destac\u00f3 que la pandemia y los cambios globales han puesto el foco en \u201crepensar y potenciar muchos aspectos de nuestro d\u00eda a d\u00eda en la universidad, tanto a nivel de docencia, investigaci\u00f3n y vinculaci\u00f3n con el medio<\/em>\u201d. Estos procesos de cambio acelerados, a\u00f1adi\u00f3, tambi\u00e9n tienen relaci\u00f3n con los \u201cdesaf\u00edos urgentes a nivel nacional en temas h\u00eddricos, clim\u00e1ticos y de acceso a recursos minerales y energ\u00e9ticos para la descarbonizaci\u00f3n<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n Reich se\u00f1al\u00f3 que el DGL es un actor gravitante en las Ciencias de la Tierra a nivel nacional, por lo que es de esperar que siga liderando iniciativas y proyectos relacionados con los desaf\u00edos que enfrenta el pa\u00eds actualmente.<\/p>\n \u00bfC\u00f3mo converge el trabajo realizado en CEGA durante la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada con su labor a la cabeza del Departamento de Geolog\u00eda?<\/strong><\/p>\n Este a\u00f1o cumpl\u00ed 21 a\u00f1os en el DGL, por lo que he visto su evoluci\u00f3n a lo largo de dos d\u00e9cadas. Sin duda que el CEGA y muchos otros proyectos o iniciativas han contribuido a cambios profundos y de gran envergadura en el Departamento a lo largo de los \u00faltimos diez a\u00f1os.<\/em><\/p>\n Por otra parte, las pol\u00edticas de renovaci\u00f3n de cuadros acad\u00e9micos promovidas por la FCFM y el desarrollo de nuevas l\u00edneas de investigaci\u00f3n han permitido posicionarnos como una unidad l\u00edder y de alto impacto en Ciencias de la Tierra, no s\u00f3lo en Chile y Latinoam\u00e9rica, sino que tambi\u00e9n a nivel mundial. Todos estos avances son un gran orgullo para el DGL y permiten seguir potenciando las sinergias a nivel interno.<\/em><\/p>\n \u00bfC\u00f3mo visualiza el trabajo conjunto de Geolog\u00eda y CEGA a futuro?<\/strong><\/p>\n El CEGA es un actor gravitante a nivel nacional, no s\u00f3lo en investigaci\u00f3n y formaci\u00f3n en geotermia, sino tambi\u00e9n en la articulaci\u00f3n y desarrollo de proyectos con el sector privado y los gobiernos regionales. Ejemplo de esto \u00faltimo son los proyectos de investigaci\u00f3n y desarrollo (I+D) de climatizaci\u00f3n de colegios, escuelas e invernaderos en diversas regiones del pa\u00eds, fomentando el impacto en las comunidades locales.<\/em><\/p>\n En este contexto, y considerando la base construida en estos diez a\u00f1os, veo m\u00faltiples oportunidades de seguir potenciando el trabajo conjunto a nivel de investigaci\u00f3n b\u00e1sica, formaci\u00f3n de capital humano avanzado e I+D. En particular, destaco las sinergias a nivel departamental que surgen de la naturaleza multidisciplinaria de la geotermia y l\u00edneas investigativas afines. Estos aspectos constituyen fortalezas que impactan positivamente a ambas unidades y que deben ser potenciadas a futuro.<\/em><\/p>\n Su sello en el DGL<\/strong><\/p>\n Reconocido por su trabajo en docencia e investigaci\u00f3n como un acad\u00e9mico excepcional y con una gran conexi\u00f3n con sus estudiantes, Martin Reich buscar\u00e1 plasmar estas caracter\u00edsticas en su gesti\u00f3n como director del Departamento de Geolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n El acad\u00e9mico indic\u00f3 que “en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, el DGL ha visto una importante renovaci\u00f3n de sus cuadros acad\u00e9micos, con la contrataci\u00f3n de profesores y profesoras j\u00f3venes en \u00e1reas de gran impacto, tales como el cambio clim\u00e1tico, geoqu\u00edmica, volcanolog\u00eda, geodesia, tect\u00f3nica, geolog\u00eda marina, entre otros”.<\/em><\/p>\n “Mi prioridad ser\u00e1 apoyar a estos talentos j\u00f3venes para que encuentren en el DGL el lugar propicio para desarrollar y potenciar al m\u00e1ximo sus intereses y capacidades, en un ambiente grato, inclusivo y diverso”, <\/em>manifest\u00f3.<\/p>\n [:en]<\/p>\n PhD in Geology from the University of Michigan, Full Professor of the Department of Geology (DGL) of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) of the Universidad de Chile since 2015 and principal investigator of the Andean Geothermal Center of Excellence (CEGA) -Fondap ANID of the Universidad de Chile and the Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica- since its inception. Martin Reich assumed director of the DGL at the beginning of July, a position he will hold until 2024 with the short-term challenge of “continuing to resume the presentiality of our university work<\/em>“.<\/p>\n A month after assuming his new position, he emphasized that the pandemic and global changes have put the focus on “rethinking and strengthening many aspects of our day-to-day work at the university, both at the level of teaching, research and links with the environment<\/em>“. These accelerated processes of change are also related to the “urgent national challenges in water, climate and access to mineral and energy resources for decarbonization<\/em>“.<\/p>\n How does the work done at CEGA during the last decade converge with your work at the head of the Geology Department?<\/strong><\/p>\n This year I celebrated 21 years in the DGL, so I have seen its evolution over two decades. Undoubtedly, CEGA and many other projects or initiatives have contributed to profound and far-reaching changes in the Department over the last ten years.<\/em><\/p>\n On the other hand, the policies of renewal of academic staff promoted by the FCFM and the development of new lines of research have allowed us to position ourselves as a leading and high impact unit in Earth Sciences, not only in Chile and Latin America, also worldwide. All these advances are a source of great pride for the DGL and allow us to continue strengthening synergies internally.<\/em><\/p>\n How do you envision Geology and CEGA working together in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n CEGA is a key player at the national level, not only in geothermal research and training, also in the articulation and development of projects with the private sector and regional governments. An example of the latter are the research and development (R&D) projects for air conditioning of schools, colleges and greenhouses in various regions of the country, promoting the impact on local communities.<\/em><\/p>\n In this context, and considering the base built in these ten years, I see multiple opportunities to continue strengthening joint work at the basic research, advanced human capital formation and R&D levels. In particular, I highlight the synergies at the departmental level that arise from the multidisciplinary nature of geothermal energy and related research lines.
