The PhD in Sciences, with a mention in Geology, is also part of the Structural Geology, Tectonics and Geophysics line of studies of CEGA since its beginnings.

The recognition, which corresponds to the highest degree within the academic career of the PUC, was approved today by the Honorable Superior Council of the house of studies, due to her outstanding teaching work and important trajectory in the field of research.

Setting the standard and creating a school

Arancibia’s work in the world of Geology has always been as a precursor of the path that women have developed in this area. She was the first woman to do a doctorate in Geology at a Chilean university and, subsequently, to win the award for Best Doctoral Thesis from the Academy of Sciences; the first woman to win a Conicyt postdoctoral project in Geology in the country; the first to be elected School Counselor in Engineering at the PUC, and the first to be Director of Postgraduate Studies at this Faculty.

Throughout her career she has distinguished the importance of occupying spaces in the world of science, given the repercussion this has on the new generations.

“I believe that when students see a female professor and researcher, a scientist, it is more normal for them that women can participate in this type of projects. That is why I believe that the contribution of women in science, and in all areas of development, is to promote and show concrete examples that it is possible to occupy spaces and make important contributions in any area, as a way of encouraging new generations“, says Arancibia.

However, the CEGA researcher maintains that there is still a long way to go: “There is talent that is not taken advantage of if we bias or preconceive certain roles and certain tasks according to gender. My observation is that, despite the progress made in recent decades, this bias is still latent in small behaviors, daily actions or comments rooted in our culture (locally and globally) that, in particular, discourage girls from dreaming and choosing the path they want in life“.

“Hopefully the day will come when this will no longer be a topic of discussion, essentially because all children are getting an equal message and opportunity“, she says.

Next research

Currently, Arancibia is starting the execution of his project Fluid flow in a variably fractured system: a revealing fracture network example from the Nevados de Chillán Volcanic Complex, benefited by an ANID Fondecyt Regular 2022-2026 fund.

The initiative is based on the study of fractured rock systems that allow the circulation of subway water and, with this, the existence of geothermal resources that can be used in different ways by the community.

“The geothermal resource that I am investigating corresponds mainly to water with temperatures between 40° and 80°C, which can be extracted to the surface to take advantage of its heat energy. Its relevance is related to the high geothermal potential that our country has due to its geological conditions and that has not been exploited despite the urgent need to reduce the polluting energies of our planet. Geothermal energy is clean, available 24/7 and sustainable over time, but we are still not using it as we should“, Arancibia assures.

Regarding the evaluation received by the initiative in its application phase, placed first in the ranking of selected projects in the Earth Sciences group, the researcher expresses that “in addition to the scientific quality of the project and the experience of the research team, it was fundamental that the study had a direct application in helping to improve the quality of life of people“.

“The review of these projects is carried out by international experts and my interpretation is that they see in geothermal energy a commonly used energy, which is an important part of the energy matrix of the most developed countries, but which in Chile and Latin America has been developed only incipiently“, she points out.[:]

[:es] Gloria Arancibia, doctora en Ciencias, con mención en Geología, fue promovida hoy Profesora Titular del Departamento de Ingeniería Estructural y Geotécnica de la PUC.
